Marafa Hell's Kitchen

The Devil's Kitchen Canyon

A hidden canyon sculpted by nature and painted gold, crimson, and orange by the setting sun.

The Story of Hell's Kitchen

Located near the village of Marafa, about 40 kilometers from Malindi, Hell's Kitchen is one of Kenya's most fascinating natural landmarks. The site is a sandstone depression carved over centuries by erosion, creating towering pinnacles, narrow gorges, and layered rock formations. As the sun begins to set, the canyon transforms into a spectacular display of reds, oranges, golds, and purples, creating one of the most photographed landscapes along the Kenyan coast.

The Giriama Connection

Hell's Kitchen remains an important cultural site for the local Giriama community. Guided tours are often led by local residents who share stories, traditions, and interpretations passed down through generations. Visiting Marafa offers not only a natural spectacle but also an opportunity to connect with the rich cultural heritage of Kenya's coastal communities.

No photograph truly captures Marafa. You have to stand at the edge as the canyon changes colour before your eyes.
